  • Jamshedi Navroze is one of the three main festive days in the Parsi Calendar. The others being Parsi New year in August and Khordad Saal, the birthday of Zarathustra.
  • Mumbai: “New Year binds you with family and religion, and it certainly takes me back to my childhood,”
  • Karachi : The Zoroastrian (Parsi) community celebrated the religious festival of Navroze.
  • Navroze used to be a national holiday in India, but as the number of Parsi people decreased its no longer a national holiday.
  • “We must have sweetened sev (vermicelli) and dahi, for breakfast loaded with badams and raisins too”

Bahá’í Naw-Rúz, Happy New Year 166 B.E. (Baha’i Era)

  • Baha’í Calendar composed of 19 months, each of 19 days
  • Each of the months (and each day)  named after an attribute of God
  • Bahá, an Arabic word meaning splendour or glory
  • Naw-Rúz is associated with the Most Great Name of God
  • Naw-Rúz is one of nine Bahá’í holy days where work is to be suspended.
  • Persian Bahá’ís still observe many of the Iranian customs associated with Norouz such as the Haft Sîn, but American Bahá’í may have a potluck dinner.

Cooking of Sumalaq (سمنک) as an ancient ritual has its own peculiarities; traditionally only women used to make it. It is notable that Sumalaq-making process is accompanied by women singing of special short verses, dancing, joking, telling either true or cock-and-bull stories. In Tajikistan and Afghanistan they sing: Samanak dar Jūsh u mā Kafcha zanēm - Dīgarān dar Khwāb u mā Dafcha zanēm. (meaning: “Samanak is boiling and we are clapping, others are asleep and we are playing daf”).
