Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square Featuring live music, dancing, and food, the Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square will celebrate the start of spring in a traditional Turkish and Kurdish way. This will be the first ever large scale Newroz festival in London, and there will be plenty of folk dancing, music, and Turkish and Kurdish food to make sure the event is a big success.

Live music Live performances at the Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square includes the rapper Serhado Serbian, plus singers Ferhat Tunc, Hesen Serif, Heme Heci and the band Carnewa. The folk dance groups Govenda Asti and Azadiya Perperok will also be adding some colour and flair to the proceedings. Kids and families are bound to have much to keep them amused at the Newroz event, which runs from 12pm - 6pm.

Food stalls Fans of Kurdish, Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine will want to sample the variety of delicious food on offer at the cultural stalls that will be set up as part of the Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square. Newroz festivals have been taking place since the 7th century BC to mark the beginning of spring, so there’ll be a rich history of cultural activities and events to draw on for the festival’s first outing in Trafalgar Square. The Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square runs from 12pm - 6pm, Saturday 14th March 2009. The event is free to attend.

I have been at Newroz -Kurdish New Year- celebration. It was a wonderful celebration. By the way Newroz is not a Turkish festival. It is a traditional Kurdish festival and was banned for a long time in Turkey.

  • Newroz

Newroz is a very old Kurdish Celebration. Newroz was forbidden In Turkey till 1995. It is not a turkish celebration. They just try to make it unimportant for kurdish people.

    Hi to all,
I just wanna say happy new year to everyone, yesterday was really great, me and my gril friend went there we had a very good time. happy new year to all kurdish people all over the world. keep Newroz away from the Turk please , who are Turk anyway????????? by the way last time i had “turkey bird” for christmas if this what your guys talking about its been eaten long ago.there not Nation called Turk .

  • fatih

Newroz was ok it wasnt all that, i would of expected it to be more live as it was in the centre of london open to all nations. it was too political as usual, newroz is the celebration of the new year and also the celebration of spring so theres no need in bringing up political things. i would just like to say to my kurdish brothers and sisters lets not hate any nations as not all kurds are good kurds as not all turks are good turks. if turks and kurds turn enemies against each other we would just loose everything in our hands, like our land that we share together. this is what some people want dont let this happen turkish kurdish we are all humans we are brothers we should be together as one force and always work together as in the past as in the ottoman times. dont be so foolish open your eyes and think for your selfs its not so hard.

YOU GO OPEN YOUR EYES, YOUR EMAIL WONT CHANGE THE WORLD ITS JUST AN OPINION ERDOGAN AND THEM OTHER PRICKS ARE THE ONES UNDER ALL THIS HATE SO GO WRITE THEM A NICE EMAIL ASWELL WHY DONT YOU?

  • to the person who replied to Fatih

Your statement is really spiteful to Fatih, as she is just a human and her idea is absolutley moderate. You should know that all people around the world has no power to change anything in the system of their country, the one who can change and and give the lands or …. are the governments and the big powers which they now all have hands to hands and do whatever they want not poeple. The best thing that people can do is just to lookafter eachother and not to kill each other that’s what all the big powers want. we need to look further not stuck in our old idea that we are not able to change. The world is not the same as before.

Nowruz is not Kurdish and certainly not Turkish. It is Persian. Kurds are one of the Original Persian Ethnicities and one of the few original inhabitants of the Iran Plateau Like Gilakies, and Mazanies). Everyone is welcome to celebrate but don't name things after yourselves wrongly …
