London – British Museum Nowruz Lecture

Nowruz is celebrated in many countries from Afghanistan and Iran to Uzbekistan.

Talks and discussion on Nowruz, Rumi poetry readings, music and reception.

17.30–18.00 Entrance to the exhibition Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World

19.00 Talks and discussion on Nowruz, how it was celebrated historically and how it is celebrated today. Introduced by author and historian Tom Holland. Speakers include Narguess Farzad, Senior Fellow in Persian, SOAS, and Zia Shahreyar, BBC Persian.

20.00 Rumi poetry readings, music and reception.
A selection of traditional and contemporary Afghan poetry, including poems by Maulana Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī and Rabia Balhki, will be read in Farsi by Reza Mohammedi and Mansor Parhizgar, accompanied by the rubab, and with English translations.
