The city of Qamishli (northeastern Syria on the border with Turkey, predominantly Kurdish, Arabs and Assyrians/Syriacs) is renowned for throwing a large Christmas parade every year in December, and celebrating Newroz festival by a large crowd every year in March.

In Kurdish legend, the holiday celebrates the deliverance of the Kurds from a tyrant, and it is seen as another way of demonstrating support for the Kurdish cause.

They speak the Kurdish language, which is a member of the Iranian branch of Indo-European languages.

Nowruz with different spelling shows up in the official calendars of following twelve coutries; Iran, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Autonomous Region of Kurdistan (part of Iraq), Georgia and Syria.

The thirteenth day of the new year festival is Sizdah Bedar (literally meaning “passing the thirteenth day”, figuratively meaning “Passing the bad luck of the thirteenth day”). This is a day of festivity in the open, often accompanied by music and dancing, usually at family picnics.

Sizdah bedar celebrations stem from the ancient Persians’ belief that the twelve constellations in the Zodiac controlled the months of the year, and each ruled the earth for a thousand years at the end of which the sky and earth collapsed in chaos. Hence Nowruz lasts twelve days and the thirteenth day represents the time of chaos when families put order aside and avoid the bad luck associated with the number thirteen by going outdoors and having picnics and parties.

Isfahan - Iran

At the end of the celebrations on this day, the sabzeh grown for the Haft Seen (which has symbolically collected all sickness and bad luck) is thrown into running water to exorcise the demons (divs) from the household. It is also customary for young single women to tie the leaves of the sabzeh before discarding it, so expressing a wish to be married before the next year’s Sizdah Bedar. Another tradition associated with this day is Dorugh-e Sizdah, literally meaning “the lie of the thirteenth”, which is the process of lying to someone and making them believe it (similar to April Fools Day).

Celebrated for millennia, the holiday is associated with a rich tapestry of customs and rituals linked with the arrival of spring.

Now, with last year’s proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly of the International Day of Nowruz, the observance is global. Nowruz is also inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Nowruz is a day for renewal. It is an opportunity to reflect on the intimate links between people and the natural world. And it carries a strong message of peace and harmony between peoples of all cultures on the basis of mutual respect and understanding.

These timeless values are at the heart of the mission of the United Nations, and are more relevant than ever as we grapple with such pressing global concerns as environmental degradation, human rights abuses, intolerance and armed conflict.

So I hope people everywhere will join in observing this Day. At a time of crisis, upheaval and change, including in the very regions where the holiday is rooted, let the spirit of Nowruz prevail.

Tajikistan means the “Land of the Tajiks”. The word Tajik was used by medieval Turks to refer to Iranian-speaking peoples. From the 11th century, the term referred to East Iranian men, but by the 15th century came to be applied to Persian speakers. In medieval Persian literature, Tajik appears as a synonym of “Persian”.

Qom, along with the shrine were raided in 1221 by the Mongols and again by the Tamerlane. In 1519 the dome of the shrine was rebuilt and the courtyard was embellished in honour of the Safavid king, Shah Ismail I.

Further expansions were done to the shrine during the 17th century by Shah Abbas I, along with the addition of schooling and other facilities.

President Obama sends an important message to those celebrating the holiday of Nowruz. At a time of great regional change and renewal, the President this year speaks directly to the Iranian people, in particular the Iranian youth. “…you – the young people of Iran – carry within you both the ancient greatness of Persian civilization, and the power to forge a country that is responsive to your aspirations.

Your talent, your hopes, and your choices will shape the future of Iran, and help light the world. And though times may seem dark, I want you to know that I am with you,” he says.

May all those who celebrate Nowruz around the world embrace the power of youth, and have a peaceful and prosperous new year.

Chaharshanbe Suri, also called the Festival of Fire, literally meaning Wednesday Feast is an ancient Iranian festival dating back to at least 1700 BCE. it is a prelude to Nowruz, which marks the arrival of spring.

The celebration usually starts in the evening, with people making bonfires in the streets and jumping over them singing zardi-ye man az to, sorkhi-ye to az man. Loosely translated, this means you want the fire to take your paleness, sickness, and problems and in turn give you redness, warmth, and energy.

There is no religious significance attached to Chaharshanbeh Soori and it serves as a cultural festival for Persian people: Persian Jews, Muslims, Armenians, Kurds, and Zoroastrians, as well as for Azeri peoples. Indeed this celebration, in particular the significant role of fire, is likely to hail from Zoroastrianism.

It is also mentioned that the festival symbolizes the fact that human has to face his ultimate fears and does so by jumping over the fire.

During the Chaharshanbe Suri, divination, especially by listening to the conversations of the passers by and interpreting what is heard (Fal-Gush) as a sign is quite common.

The letter in particular says:

“Meanwhile, all Turkic people from Caucasus to Central Asia and beyond celebrate Nowruz and the coming of the Spring – a wonderful tradition going back several millenniums. Novruz (Nevruz) generally falls around March 21, corresponding to the vernal equinox, when the day and night are of equal length. Novruz is an official holiday in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Other Turkic peoples such as Uyghurs, Yakuts, Karakalpaks, Volga or Kazan Tatars, Bashkirs and Crimean Tatars also participate in spring celebrations.

However, in subsequent years Azerbaijan, Turkey and other Turkic nations were left out, this ancient holiday was targeted only at Iran and the Persian-American community.

We urge President Obama to mention Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani-Americans, Turkey and Turkish-Americans, and all Turkic-Americans in the annual Presidential message on Nowruz celebrations, because for some reason we were left out in the 2006-2010 addresses. May this ancient, peaceful and fun tradition bring all people closer, increase dialog between civilizations, promote mutual understanding and cultural diversity”

Born in Tehran, Iran in 1980, Sepideh Raissadat is an Iranian classical singer. Sepideh began studying Radif (the Repertoire of the Persian classical music) at the age of 9 with the famous Persian singer Ms. Parissa.

Her first album was recorded when she was 18, thanks to Ostad Parviz Meshkatian. This was the first time a female vocalist was singing in duet in Iran, after the Revolution of 1979, while they could only sing in choirs.

After she finished her B.A. in Painting, she moved to Italy to pursue her artistic education. She graduated in Musicology majoring in Ethnomusicology from the University of Bologna.

While in Italy, she was invited by the Vatican and different Italian TV channels and performed as a soloist with one of the oldest Italian choirs. She also performed with the most well known Italian musicians such as Franco Battiato, Andrea Parodi, etc.

Over the past few years, she has academically researched the pre-Islamic ancient Persian music. Currently her major research area is focused on Sassanid music.
