Maryam Javanbakht works in the millennia-old style of traditional black and white Iranian calligraphy. Her hybrid practice involving watercolor, gauche, chalk and ink on paper, known as “Naghashi Khat” (painting-calligraphy) imbues classic Iranian poems like those of Molavi, Hafez, Khayyam and Baba Taher with a transatlantic contemporary flair.
Separation, longing and reunification are the chief symbolic motifs in her work, holding fast to the Iranian poetic tradition of deep nostalgic sentiment.

Crisp and stylized calligraphic marks meet voluptuous patches of lush atmospheric color. Sorrow, joy, love and intoxication emerge as scintillating aesthetics, cross-culturally relevant and layered with emotional resonance. Warming and rich with folkloric epiphany, Javanbakht’s works on paper are a refreshing moment of artistry linked to the rich legacy of calligraphic poetry in Iran.
Maryam Javanbakht was born in 1978 in Golpayegan, Iran. She is a practicing physician at a hospital, as well as consulting director and passionate supporter of a children’s charity association which works to help cure children with congenital malformations, This September she will receive her master’s degree in Public Health.
