Iran falls to 168 in Corruption Perception Index 2009

Iran has fallen from 141st on the list of 180 countries to 168th – one of the most marked declines.

Countries where the political and security environment is particularly volatile, such as Yemen, Iran and Iraq rank at the bottom of the list. These countries face the challenge of establishing solid and transparent public institutions, with appropriate mechanisms for accountability: the essential elements for preventing and fighting corruption. Where these are absent, any kind of success is very difficult.

Regional Highlights: Middle East and North Africa

With only six countries scoring 5 or above (out of 10), and 13 countries scoring below 5, the perception of corruption remains a serious problem in the Middle East and North Africa.

The poor results of the 2009 Corruptions Perception Index (CPI) reflect how conflict and political turmoil in the region seriously hamper the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts. The threat to political and institutional infrastructures partly explains the governance gap in the region while other factors such as lack of transparency, insecurity and oil wealth continue to fuel corruption.

Other countries, such as Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon are still perceived as highly corrupt despite the fact that corruption is openly addressed as a principal obstacle to development and the issue of enhancing integrity and accountability in the public and the private sectors is now being addressed. (This is also true for Palestine, although it is not included in the 2009 CPI.)

The 2009 index shows improvement in the scores of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, and Jordan. It remains to be seen whether this is due to increased political will to fight corruption or whether the negative effects of corruption are being masked by large surpluses, particularly in the oil and gas-rich Gulf states, which are fuelling rapid economic development. In the case of the UAE, one explanation for an improved score may be the increase in corruption cases
involving high-level executives, including UAE citizens, as well as the strengthening of the country’s Financial Audit Department.

The negative effects of the financial crisis have underscored the importance of improving governance across the region.

Exhibit: Iranian banknotes uprising

Anti-government activists are not allowed to express themselves in Iranian media, so theses activists have taken their expressions to another high circulation mass-medium, banknotes. The Central Bank of Iran has tried to take these banknotes out of circulation, but there are just too many of them, and gave up. For the activists’ people it’s a way of saying “We are here, and the green movement is going on”.

Following are examples of such banknotes, mostly written in green ink:

1- V (for victory) stamp

2- Top: Plan to write 1 Billion slogans on bank notes.
Bottom: Bank notes without slogan is like saying no to spring (of green movement)

3- A re-write of a saying on the left side (Iranian people will find “knowledge’ no matter where – Prophet Muhammad) – Iranian people will find “justice” no matter where.

4- They stole oil money and give it to Chavez

5- Khamenei the non-believer is servant of Putin

6- Based on a kid’s poem – How is Iran doing? It’s full of sorrow, its oil is gone, took its gas to India, got China’s garbage, everything is imported, exports are forgotten, close down all local productions.

7- Cheater Khamenei and power-hungry Ahmadinejad

9- Long live freedom

All U.S. residents must be counted—both citizens and non citizens. More detailed socioeconomic information previously collected through the decennial census will be asked of a small percentage of the population through the annual American Community Survey.

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year.

In March of 2010, census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States.

Just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided. If you don’t mail the form back, you may receive a visit from a census taker.

Any personal data you provide is protected under federal law.

Race is key to implementing many federal laws and is needed to monitir compliance with the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act. Race data are also used to assess fairness of employment practices, to monitir racial disparities in characteristics such as health and education and to plan and obtain funds for public services.

1001 colors: Contemporary art from Iran

November 2 – 22, 2009 Canvas New York Art

New York is set to hold an exhibition of paintings by 23 internationally-renowned and emerging contemporary artists from Iran. 1001 Colors, Contemporary Art from Iran will present 50 artworks created in various styles including expressionism and abstract, addressing the interplay between the traditional and modern Iranian culture.

Organized and curated by independent art consultant and designer Nina Seirafi, 1001 Colors, Contemporary Art from Iran kicked off on Nov. 2 in a temporary exhibition space on the Bowery and will run until Nov. 22, 2009.

1001 colors documents and investigates some of the many forms of artistic expression now taking place in Iran. The 50 works of art reflect a variety of formal and social concerns in paintings that range stylistically from representational to expressionist and almost pure abstraction. Although the subjects of the representational works vary widely, they frequently address the interplay between traditional Iranian cultural heritage and contemporary expression. These tensions are seen in Freydoun Omidi’s minimalist reimagining of Persian calligraphy and the sinuous but carefully controlled line found in Mohammad Rahimi’s works, which are based on millennia-old cave paintings. Paintings by Rezvan Sadeghzadeh present women facing obstacles in a male-dominated society. Pouya Aryanpour’s “floating objects” – abstract and ominous – litter his canvases and suggest untethered, uncontrolled presences.

Several of the featured artists are exhibiting outside Iran for the first time. These artists include Sassan Gharedaghlou, Mohammad Rahimi, Arash Fesharaki, Saba Masoumian, who articulate the aspirations of artists in contemporary Iran and their relationship to their own culture and that of the broader world.

Kambozia Partovi’s Border Cafe: Reyhan is the mother of two young children, living in a small town in northern Iran near the Turkish border. When her husband dies, his brother Nasser is eager to take over the family by marrying Reyhan and raising her children in accordance with tradition. Right after her husband’s funeral, the elder women in the family urge Reyhan to shed her black mourning robes so that she can marry Nasser and welcome him into her bed. Nov. 08 – Open Center: Lecture, An Evening of Persian Mystical Poetry and Wisdom

Franklin Lewis, one of the most distinguished Rumi scholars in America, will speak on the cultural, historical and spiritual world of Medieval Persia from which the great Sufi poets emerged. He will discuss the principal ideas, the lodges and brotherhoods formed around mystical teachings, and will read the poetry of Rumi’s father and teachers, and the work of Sana’i, Attar and others. Then, Sufi musical virtuoso (tanbour, oud, nay flute) and Farsi reciter Amir Vahab, and harpist/nay flautist Arsalaan, will join Peter Rogen, well-known Rumi interpreter, to weave the mystical verses of Rumi with Sufi music as three dervishes whirl in prayer. The evening concludes with an exploration by Professor Lewis of some of the major teachings of Rumi’s poetry including the religion of love, human nature and the Sufi path, and the world of spirit. Translator and Rumi lover Fereydoun Nazem will also share his work.

The NYU Persian Cultural Society cordially invites you to a private evening with Hafez Nazeri in an exploration of the musical traditions of Iran. The Rumi Symphony Project is an ongoing part in Hafez Nazeri’s search to integrate classical Iranian and Western musical traditions into a new genre. The Nazeris will be joined by acclaimed musicians Paul Neubauer, viola; Ida Kavafian, viola; Fred Sherry, cello; Matt Haimovitz, cello; Tim Cobb, double bass; Hussein Zahawy, percussion and Shane Shanahan, percussion.

A project organized by Taraneh Hemami & Ghazaleh Hedayat

Featuring the work of eight artists living in Tehran, Iran; Nima Alizadeh, Saba Alizadeh, Mohammad Ghazali, Ghazaleh Hedayat, Abbas Kowsari, Mehran Mohajer, Neda Razavipour, and Homayoun Sirizi – alongside new work by San Francisco-based artist Taraneh Hemami.

This multi-media exhibition compiles a collective narrative of everyday Tehran, the largest city in the Middle East and the 16th most populated city in the world with close to 8 million residents. Representing the current unpredictability of each day in Tehran and also the hope that comes from imagining a better future, the artists chronicle narratives of place and time, demystifying life in a county that has been misunderstood and maligned for decades.

Report: Global Gender Gap Index 2009

Iceland has claimed the top spot of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2009 from Norway which slipped to third position behind Finland. South Africa and Lesotho made great strides in closing their gender gaps to enter the top 10 for the first time. The report’s Index assesses countries on how well they are dividing their resources and opportunities among their male and female populations, regardless of the overall levels of these resources and opportunities.
