The [...]]]> Haft-Seen or the seven ‘S’s is a traditional table setting of Nowruz, the traditional Iranian spring celebration. Today the haft seen table includes seven specific items, all starting with the letter seen in the Persian alphabet. Haft-Seen was originally called Haftchin derived from the words Chin and Haft meaning “to place” seven (items).

The table is set by placing the following items which symbolize Zoroastrian yazatas or divinities.

The “Haft Chin” items are:

• Mirror – symbolizing Sky
• Apple – symbolizing Earth
• Candles – symbolizing Fire
• Golab – rose water symbolizing Water
• Sabzeh – wheat, or barley sprouts symbolizing Plants
• Goldfish – symbolizing Animals
• Painted Eggs – symbolizing Humans and Fertility

The Haft Seen items are:

• Sabzeh – wheat, barley, mung bean or lentil sprouts growing in a dish – symbolising rebirth
• Samanu – sweet pudding made from wheat germ – symbolising affluence
• Senjed – dried oleaster fruit – symbolising love
• Sir – garlic – symbolising medicine
• Sib -  apples – symbolising beauty and health
• Somāq – sumac fruit – symbolising (the color of) sunrise
• Serkeh – vinegar – symbolising old-age and patience

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority is pleased to announce that on Sunday, April 1st 2012 it will open the Bull Run Special Events Center in to accommodate the Persian cultural festival known as 13 Bedar (or Sizdah Bedar).

Sizdah Bedar (or 13 Bedar) is a day of celebration in the outdoors in Persian culture. This day falls on the 13th day of the Persian calendar, which usually falls in early April. Part of the tradition is to knot blades of grass or wheat and send them downstream. With Cub Run flowing next to the Special Events Center, it provides a perfect place for this custom that symbolizes out with the old and beginning a new year.

Instead, Northern Virginia Park Authority is offering Bull Run Special Events Center as an alternate site for this year’s celebration.

Our first event will take place on Saturday 24th March, the first Saturday following Nowruz and will feature a fun and heady mix of film, calligraphy, language, family activities and food.

So get ready to enjoy the new day.

A Glance at some of the day’s activities:

Poet Anthony Anaxagorou and musical artists Marcel Cartier + Nana D and many more. Anthony will also be discussing the 13th Century poet Saadi’s poem “Bani Adam”, “Sons of Adam”, a translation of which sits in the United Nations.Photo Exhibition by Parisa Nasri.

Poet and DJ Afshin Shemirani will be behind the decks, for a last hour of Persian traditional music and tech house.

Film screenings

A SURPRISE Iranian Feature debut for the UK it has already won prizes in film festivals.

Academic talks In the name of peace, in opposition to war, the panel joins three dots. Our dots are three of the defining faculties of humanity, language, mathematics and imagery. The panel will argue that human rights are not just something to be upheld, to the point of death for some, but now coming within the domain of science and logic. One key aspect of the scientific advances here will be demonstrated using apparatus, never before seen in public. But advances have been not just made, but lost. That is just part of why our panel is for peace, not war.

‘THESE THREE SIMPLE TRUTHS’: Dr KLAUS ABELS will give a brief glimpse of the amazingly simple system underlying the variation in neutral word order across all human languages. The system appears to be shared by all humans and, like our linguistic faculty more generally, partly characterizes us as humans.

Professor JULIAN STALLABRASS will tell us how modern media allow the ‘enemy’ to speak back directly to those whose governments wage war.

Professor GEORGE GHEVERGHESE JOSEPH who will help us join the three dots.

Nowruz No War will show that from ancient times to now, Iran has been part of our intellectual and scientific development. An attack on Iran would be an attack on our history – possibly non-recoverable.

Nowruz Commission, an alliance of twelve cultures who celebrate Nowruz on the first day of Spring at the exact moment of vernal equinox as the beginning of a new year, announced its third annual gala event in Washington. The event will be held in the Hall of the Americas at the historal building of the Organization of American States in Washington, DC.

The Commission held its inaugural event at the Great Hall of Thomas Jefferson building of the Library of Congress, where members of Congress from both major parties presided over the event, and the account of its inauguration was registered in the Congressional Record.

“Nowruz has been celebrated by many cultures for thousands of years. The historical point was that Afghans, Azeris, Georgians, Iraqis, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Persians, Russians, Tatars, Tajiks, Turks, and Ukrainians had never before celebrated Nowruz together under the same roof until March 17, 2010” said the Commission’s Chairman and Co-founder Nasser Kazeminy.

Nowruz Gift Program in Afghanistan
The Commission partners with the Department of Defense and the Office of the Mayor of Kabul to present 700 Afghan children, currently cared for in orphanges across Afghanistan, with a Nowruz gift (Aidee) along with a celebration ceremony.

In addition, the children will be asked to participate in a Nowruz greeting card competition. 10 top drawings will be selected as winners to receive a cash prize of $1000 each. The prize will be held in a special education fund for the winners. The winning drawings will be presented electronically on the Nowruz Commission web site and available for purchase to be sent out as electronic Nowruz greeting cards. Any revenues generated from the program will be fully dedicated to the cause of education for the needy children of Afghanistan.

The event is by invitation only, but sponsorship packages are available! Space is limited!

Nowruz Commission is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of care and compassion embedded in the philosophy in the ancient rites of Nowruz. His Excellency Erlan Idrissov is the Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United States and Brazil. The Honorable Bijan R. Kian is the former member of the Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. As a senior member of the administration, he served under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, from 2006-2011.

Iranian-Americans will host a special celebration of Nowruz for over 2,000 residents of LA’s Skid Row community at The Midnight Mission. This unique outdoor festival will feature a traditional Nowruz meal and delicacies as well as special performances by notable Iranian-American performers and dance ensembles.

In the time-honored tradition of giving Eydi (gifts) during this time, every guest will receive a gift bag containing new clothing and hygiene products as well as toys for the children.

On this day streets surrounding the Midnight Mission will be closed and dressed with flags and banners to create a festive atmosphere.  Dinner tables will be setup to serve traditional Nowruz meals and delicacies.  On a special stage setup for this event, notable Iranian American performers and dance ensembles will present traditional Iranian music and dances in colorful costumes. In addition, dignitaries and event sponsors will be present to lend their support.  In the time-honored tradition of giving Eydi (gifts) during this time, every guest will receive a gift bag containing clothing and hygiene products as well as toys for the children.

Join us for a spring celebration of music with Persian-tuned pianist, Ramin Zoufonoun featuring his “Spring Suite” based on original compositions,  arrangements of classical Persian songs about spring, as well cross-cultural pieces inspired by American Jazz and Iranian folk music, based on poetry by Rumi and Fereydun Moshiri.

With musical guests Lynea Diaz-Hagan (vocals), Hossein Massoudi (vocals), Jamsheed Agahi (daf, tombak). Guest poet Sholeh Wolpe will read from her new collection, Forbidden: Poems from Iran and its Exiles (books available for purchase)

Traditional Music and Dance Performance

Najva Ensemble was founded by Sina Bayat in Jan., 2006. The thought of forming Najva was a spark released from rich Iranian poetry, literacy, and culture. Najva’s music includes both the songs and lyrics mainly composed by Sina, as well as a collection of folkloric songs from different provinces of Iran. Najva has been formed by a group of distinguished and renowned musicians to better fulfill its goal of binding with listener’s mind and heart, influencing love, peace, and exhilaration while introducing and promoting Iranian classical and folkloric music.

Najva has been honored by having performed for many non-profit organizations helping them to raise fund for their humanitarian causes as well as numerous other concerts. Najva has been one of the biggest highlights of the Mehrgan Festivals in 2007, 2008 and 2010.
